Vintage is the New Modern

By Maegan Partee

Vintage clothes have become way more popular in the last few years. Young people are beginning to dress more in the vision of Audrey Hepburn, Goldie Hawn and Dita Von Teese. So, instead of going to a million different stores to find what they want, they rummage through their parents and grandparents closets.

According to about.com/style, “The term vintage is used to describe clothing between 20 and 100 years old which is clearly representative of the era in which it was produced. Vintage clothing can be used, new (from dead stock), manufactured, and handmade.”

The most important thing to remember is that every decade that passes brings new vintage items turning vintage items into an antique.

Camry Booker, an exercise science major at the University of Memphis, has begun buying more rare clothing items since she embrace a new vegetarian lifestyle.

The vintage look began to appeal to her as she started look at the style on social media apps like Pinterest and Instagram. After seeing a lot of bohemian hippie look she described her style as a modern Lisa Bonet.

She started by collecting some of her relative’s old clothes from the 1970s and wearing baggier clothes. “I like looking different from everyone else. I’m embracing my new hippie, zen self,” Booker explained.

After a few more unsuccessful trips to the local Good Will, she decided it was time to start looking at vintage stores. “I always want to go to a vintage store but I never know where one was,” said Booker.

After a few weeks she started to look for vintage stores in Memphis. She found Flashback Memphis, Red Velvet Vintage, and Sugar Plum Consignments.

“I’m glad I looked up where some stores are because one is near my job and two are down the street from my school,” Booker said excitedly. “I will probably start with Flashback since it’s the closest one to me.”

Flash Back Memphis is a very popular vintage department store on Central Avenue.  Millet Vance and her husband have been in business for over 20 years and has seen more young people show interest in dated clothing.

“Usually college students would come in to look for clothes for parties, but lately they have been buying more clothes like polka-dot halter dresses and bold, geometric sweaters,” said Vance.

A lot of the clothes in Flashback look very new and unique. For any style that you would want to try, you could find at this store.

To find more vintage designer clothes like Katie-Grace Owens, a fashion merchandising student at the University of Memphis, then Sugar Plum Consignments is the right place.

“Marc Jacobs and Coco Chanel are my favorite designers. I would love to have some of their earlier work but it is really hard to find,” Owens explained.

Since Sugar Plum is a consignment store, which is a second hand store that sells merchandise on behalf of the owner who also gets a certain percentage of the profits, big designers such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel and big name brands like Chicos can be found.

After looking on their Facebook page, Owens decided to drive to the store over the Thanksgiving break to see if she can find anything she will like. “Their tweed coats look really adorable and I love that they look like some of the clothes that you would find on Mad Men,” Owens said.

Red Velvet Vintage is a boutique that Trina Spencer, an international business student at Christian Brother University, found while scrolling through Facebook.

Red Velvet Vintage is known for their clothes having a pin-up girl look. In Webster’s Dictionary a pin-up girl is “a girl or woman whose glamorous qualities make her a suitable subject for a pinup.” These picture were mainly used in publications like Playboy and Maxim magazine in the 1940s.

She was looking for the right place to find a good dress to be up a flapper girl from the 1920s. “I read the comments and people said their clothes are very cute,” Spencer said.

Walking into the boutique, Spencer squealed at the shiny gold headbands and necklaces. Gravitating toward the jewelry, picked up a colorful, square cut necklace with some big chunky rings.

She tried on a couple of fringe and halter dresses but ultimately she fell in love with a gold glittery headband and a string of white pearls. “These are going to look perfect with my costume! I am glad I came her instead of going to Forever 21 like I planned on doing.” said Spencer.

I loving celebrating spring by putting on a beautiful dress and enjoying the sunshine. I have always loved wrap dresses because they are very flattering for almost every figure. Now that the flowers are beginning to bloom, so are the floral pattern clothes.

My floral splice wrap dress is from Charlotte Russe. It is beautiful and flowy with a cold shoulder feature and a slender belt at the waist. Usually when I have a piece of clothing with a very dominant pattern, such as plaid or floral, I let that be the statement piece of my outfit.

I want to go for a boho-chic vibe and I want my accessories to play off the floral pattern in my dress. Since the dress has a splice at the neckline, I would either go without a necklace or pair it with a choker.Continue reading “Style Guru Style: Chic Florals”

WHAT TO WEAR: Causal and Homemade

College Fashionista

We are quickly approaching the halfway mark of this semester, and it is definitely beginning to feel like spring. College students can finally shed the layers and dress for the nice cool air.

This Fashionista from the University of Memphis loves to keep it casual. Her favorite things to wear are T-shirts and jeans. Today she rocked a black graphic T-shirt with a long jean maxi skirt. She isn’t into brand names or bright, loud colors. She prefers dark colors like navy blue and black. “I’ve never worried about what brand of clothes I am wearing,” she said. “I like things that are cute and comfortable.”Continue reading “WHAT TO WEAR: Causal and Homemade”

STYLE ADVICE: Light and Dark

Color can always add magic to an outfit. Using different combinations can turn a basic outfit into an eye-catcher. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the colors aren’t too loud, that they don’t clash, or that they aren’t too bland.

One example of a bad color combination are cool neutral colors, such as beige, gray, or white, used with pale colors. These colors can end up washing each other out if there isn’t any contrast in the outfit.

A great way to avoid this would be to try color blocking, which is when you use contrast to block colors in an outfit. Let’s say you have a baby pink top and coral jeggings, you can break it up by adding big black belt and black boots.Continue reading “STYLE ADVICE: Light and Dark”

STYLE GURU BIO: Maegan Partee

CollegeFashionista

Hello everyone! My name is Maegan Partee and I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. I attend the University of Memphis with a major in journalism.

My love for fashion began in my freshman year of college. I didn’t have to wear a school uniform anymore and I was excited to wear what I wanted. My favorite styles are bohemian, like flowy dresses in spring and cardigans in fall, and rocker chic, like moto jackets and boots.

I get most of my inspiration for my outfits on Pinterest. I love making new boards, for accessories, shoes, and dresses. Fashion week is my favorite subject. My top designers are Eli Saab, Marchesa, and Ralph & Russo. I love the movement that their dresses create and how elegant people look in them. Other designers I like are Zac Posen, Betsy Johnson, and Alexander McQueen.Continue reading “STYLE GURU BIO: Maegan Partee”
